What is GenCast?

GenCast is a machine-learning weather model that generates probabilistic forecasts by producing many different possible future weather trajectories from slightly varied starting conditions, in the manner of a traditional ensemble forecast but built on a diffusion-based AI architecture instead of solving physical equations. This lets it express the likelihood and range of possible outcomes, including the chance of extreme events, days into the future.
