What the current evidence supports

Human editorial judgment · 2026-10-29

Proceed with caution

Why
The checkpoint is openly licensed (OpenMDW v1.1) and a working end-to-end pipeline with 16 MTG FCI channels, 10-minute steps and a two-hour horizon was demonstrated live. The evidence for forecast skill in Europe is still absent: the only quantitative skill claims come from the US-trained StormScope paper, and no partner has reported results. The free data feed also adds a roughly one-hour delay, which limits true nowcasting use. That makes it worth piloting but not relying on yet.
Next
Run a back-test of the nvidia/stormscope-meteosat checkpoint through Earth2Studio against persistence and optical-flow nowcasts on your own region and season, and price the commercial EUMETSAT feed before committing to a latency target.
