Microsoft MatterGen is a generative AI model that designs new inorganic crystal structures from scratch using a diffusion process, gradually refining random atomic arrangements into stable, physically plausible materials. Researchers can condition MatterGen on target properties, such as a desired electronic band gap, magnetic behavior, or mechanical strength, so it proposes candidate materials engineered toward those properties rather than searching through existing compound databases.
